Shop our selection of artisanal items from the Student Craft program

Founded in 1893, the Student Craft program at Berea College is a unique initiative that reclaims ties to cultural heritage through the mastery of folk arts. Students dedicate themselves to the skills of broom craft, ceramics, weaving, or woodcraft. Their artisanal creations are sold here at the Log House Craft Gallery, including items like whittled wooden toys, naturally-dyed tapestries, and hand-spun pottery. Each cent spent on Student Craft goes back into the school, allowing us to continue offering tuition-free education to those that experience economic uncertainty. ...

Broomcraft

Around the world, brooms are a symbol of good luck and prosperity. Across cultures, brooms are used to sweep away negativity and protect from malevolence. In his efforts to revive local trades and crafts, college president William Goodall Frost brought the talents of Appalachian weaving and woodworking to his school as the Student Craft program, preserving the creative heritage of generations. Now, Berea College is the country’s longest continually operating broom craft studio, currently creating around five thousand brooms a year. Shop these intricate and authentic handmade brooms exclusively through Berea College, at the Log House Craft Gallery.

Weaving

The skill of weaving has been a part of the human tapestry since time immemorial. What began as a functional practice for warmth and protection became a meaningful source of decoration, symbolism, and tradition. Inspired by nature, community, and their own lives, our incredible students have created fine home-spun textiles that are sure to delight. Shop gorgeous woven wares including blankets, throws, scarves, pillows, placemats, table runners, and quilt blocks, all made with naturally-cultivated dyes.

Woodcraft

Discover our collection of fine furniture and handcrafted wooden wares, made by the skilled members of our Student Craft program. Each item was created with great attention and a devoted eye for detail, formed from natural, sustainable wood, and made to last for generations. Shop for stools, chairs, and tables as well as kitchenware like baskets, bowls, cutting boards, and cooling racks.
